Tanker specialist AET has signed a newbuilding contract with South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for the construction of two LNG dual-fuel Suezmaxes
SHI disclosed the deal on 7 November, reporting a contract for two crude oil tankers valued at around US$200M, scheduled for delivery through 2029, without naming the owner. Singapore-headquartered AET, a subsidiary of Malaysian energy logistics group MISC Berhad, has been named as the counterparty.
This is the second Suezmax order reported this week. Riviera first reported that Thenamaris, led by Nikolas Martinos, had ordered a pair in China. The company confirmed the 157,000-dwt duo is set for delivery by CSSC’s Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding in 2027.
AET noted with this order, its dual-fuel fleet – including both active vessels and those under construction – will grow to 18 ships, comprising 15 LNG-powered vessels and three running on ammonia.
AET highlighted the environmental benefits of LNG operation, stating the vessels can emit 14–23% less greenhouse gases (GHG) on a well-to-wake basis compared with conventional marine fuels.
Each tanker will be equipped with an Everllence 6G70ME-C10.5-GI main engine, designed for fuel efficiency and reduced methane slip. The company has also opted for the SVESSEL intelligent smart ship solution, along with energy-saving devices such as SAVER Stator-D (duct), SARB (rudder bulb), SAVER-Fins, variable frequency drive systems and a hybrid vertical bow design.
“This marks another important step in building a more sustainable fleet and supporting our customers’ decarbonisation ambitions,” said AET president and chief executive Nick Potter.
“We’re investing in technologies that deliver lower-carbon energy solutions today, while keeping firmly on course towards a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 2030 as part of our energy transition strategy,” he added.
With a fleet of over 60 vessels, AET is a leading ship-to-ship lightering operator in the US Gulf and a market leader in dynamic positioning shuttle tanker operations, operating in Brazil and Norway, according to its website.
