Shipowner ForestWave will retrofit onboard carbon capture technology integrated into an exhaust gas cleaning system on two of its general cargo ships later this year
Netherlands-based shipowner and manager ForestWave will retrofit two shortsea general cargo vessels with an onboard carbon capture (OCC) technology that will capture as much as 10% of the ships’ CO2 emissions.
Integrated with an exhaust gas cleaning system, the OCC technology will be fitted on 10,600-dwt general cargo ships FWN Sun and FWN Sea at equipment provider Value Maritime’s quay in Rotterdam in Q4 2024.
ForestWave will use 3-MW Filtree systems, which are designed with a 10% carbon capture rate, and can be upgraded to a 30% carbon capture rate, according to the Dutch OCC provider.
The Filtree system filters sulphur, CO2 and 99% of particulate matter from the vessels’ exhaust streams. The OCC technology helps to reduce emissions further, capturing CO2 from the vessel’s exhaust and collecting it in dedicated tanks on board. This is then discharged onshore where it can be used, for example, in the sustainable cultivation of greenhouse crops, in methanol plants, or stored underground.
