IoT application collaborations announced to drive vessel optimisation

Brightree joins the fast-growing group of certified application providers offering applications on Inmarsat’s Fleet Connect service. Fleet Connect provides dedicated two-way communication channels, independent of the ship’s primary satellite connectivity, for application providers to deliver their services.

Brightree will use Fleet Connect to offer its marine bunker and fuel consumption monitoring application and remote engine monitoring services. It uses Coriolis mass flow meters to accurately measure marine engine fuel consumption and bunkering transfer. Brightree’s Dandelion cloud-based remote controller transmits real-time consumption data over Fleet Connect, to help achieve fuel efficiency.

“We have been seeking a reliable and cost-effective IoT data satellite solution for some time,” said Brightree managing director Kevin Peng. “Fleet Connect is a dedicated bandwidth for IoT data, which comes with high reliability of connectivity,” he said.

South Korea-based maritime solution provider marineworks has joined collaborative ClassNK ShipDC’s Internet of Ships Open Platform (IoS-OP). It is the first South Korean company to join the initiative, which is using data from Japanese shipping majors Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line), among others, to implement vessel optimisation programmes.

IoS-OP is a universal platform, enabling ship operations data to be shared among shipbuilders, manufacturers and related service providers, without compromising the profits of data providers. Using this IoT platform, marineworks can transmit and use ship operations data and raise awareness of vessel optimisation technologies. It provides smart ship solutions for monitoring, analysing and converting the ship’s condition data in real-time to useable information. This can be used to determine and visualise the ship’s operating environment and risk level for safe and efficient operations.

In Norway, Kongsberg Digital signed a partnership agreement making OrbitMI’s maritime intelligence, compliance, vessel tracking and vessel performance applications available to Vessel Insight customers via the Kognifai Marketplace. OrbitMI will offer three different applications via Kognifai: Orbit OMI, Orbit Comply and Orbit Reporter.

Vessel Insight collects and contextualises data from vessels to enable shipowners and operators to begin their digitalisation process.

Kognifai Marketplace is a network of partnerships delivering applications that can be used by Vessel Insight subscribers to operate more sustainably and safely.

In addition, 10 start-ups have been selected to progress through Equinor, Kongsberg, Capgemini and Techstars’ energy accelerator programme. This year, the accelerator will be held digitally with more than 100 mentors contributing their experience and the opportunity to create networks.

The programme started on 15 February and ends on 11 May with a demonstration day, where start-ups will present their solutions to Equinor, the partners, and other potential investors.
