Port-IT has launched a new version of its Vanir endpoint cyber security suite for ships with enhanced onboard interfaces and methods of managing software updates
This is the biggest programme release to date for Port-IT and comes after receiving feedback from the maritime industry to include new functions.
There is a new user interface on vessels and a patch management feature, enabling fleet managers to update their applications and programs remotely.
“This version is the biggest release we have ever done” said Port-IT chief executive Youri Hart.
“It enables customers to receive feedback on all cyber security services used via a single unique onboard interface; showing true synergies between the products,” he explained.
“This is not seen in the industry so far and really is a major step in protecting ships.”
Mr Hart said this version had a whole new user interface and service integration, while the addition of patch management was a “long-standing client wish.”
Managers can remotely update Vanir endpoint security to this latest version and update their own applications, such as Winzip, across their fleets without involving the crew or outside engineers.
“Although patch management is not directly a security feature, it does help in preventing malicious attacks in programmes that have known issues,” said Mr Hart.
Port-IT developed its own software for updating programmes remotely as it could not find efficient and effective versions in the commercial market.
“We first scouted the market for already existing patch management applications, but those were costly and would raise the licence price for customers significantly,” explained Mr Hart.
“By developing our own patch management feature, we can integrate it as a service in our full product line-up, making it available via a single dashboard.”
This avoids passing on the higher costs to shipping companies, while enabling Port-IT to extend support and alerting.
“With this alerting feature, customers receive notifications, for example on malicious activity or newly installed software,” said Mr Hart.
Port-IT has also extended its support to Apple iOS devices on vessels as more of these mobile devices are used by crew more frequently.
“Customers can receive push messages on their mobile phone or Apple Watch, notifying them of a high-risk alert on one of their vessels,” said Mr Hart.
Vanir endpoint security brings top-level security on board vessels and enables shipowners to be compliant with IMO security regulations such as those introduced in 2021.
“With active 24/7 security monitoring by the security operations centre, Port-IT raises the defence to the next level,” said Mr Hart.
