Two Japanese companies have combined forces to introduce a digital platform to manage carbon emissions reduction
Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Yusen Logistics Co have introduced a digital platform to manage greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction in shipping.
This collaboration will use a software suite from Dutch startup 123Carbon to support reducing Scope 3 GHG emissions.
NYK is lowering its carbon emissions by using biofuels in its bulk shipping business. The joint platform recognises the environmental value of these reductions, then allocates them to Yusen and issues a certificate of confirmation.
Using this service, Yusen procures GHG emissions reductions generated by NYK and provides accompanying certificates. Yusen also uses sustainable biofuels for some operations and the resulting GHG reductions are recognised, verified and certificated.
Allocatiing credits recognising reduced GHG emissions are secured using blockchain technology to prevent data tampering, while allocations are verified by a third-party certification organisation.
NYK said its customers can monitor GHG emissions, reductions and using alternative fuels during cargo shipping, adding transparency to the process.
NYK supplies biofuel to car carriers, bulk carriers and crude oil tankers. In November 2023, it released its group decarbonisation strategy, which sets a target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Yusen is working toward its medium-term target of reducing GHG emissions by 45% by 2030, focusing primarily on Scope 1 and 2 emissions to align with its goal of achieving decarbonisation by 2050.
Riviera’s Maritime Decarbonisation Conference Asia, will be held in Singapore, 15-16 April 2024 where experts and shipowners will examine the most viable decarbonisation pathways for Asia’s shipping industry. This conference will bring together the latest thinking and developments on net-zero strategies, regulations, technologies, supply chain maturity and economics.
