In another positive sign for the offshore oil and gas sector, Strategic Marine has inked a contract to construct four 40-m fast crew boats for Malaysia’s Surya Nautika
The 40-m Gen3 fast crewboats (FCBs) will be designed by Australia’s Southerly Designs in collaboration with Strategic Marine. These FCBs will be delivered to the licensed Petronas contractor, starting in Q1 2023.
Surya Nautika provides marine transport and offshore support services for the Malaysian offshore oil and gas industry, with prominent clients that include Petronas, Shell and ExxonMobil. The company currently owns and operates a fleet of seven crewboats, with the latest order aimed at both fleet expansion and renewal, making Surya Nautika one of the largest crewboat operators in Malaysia. Surya Nautika also provides diving and engineering services in Malaysia and is currently investing in a new saturation diving system and ROVs for its subsea business.
Surya Nautika managing director Muhamad Faez Bin Ab Gani said, “Our FCB fleet will now expand to 10 ships during the course of next year which we expect to enable us to achieve economies of scale and to provide a wider range of services to our clients in the future. We look forward to collaborating further with Strategic Marine and hope to place additional orders in the near future.”
Surya Nautika’s is the third order placed for Strategic Marine’s and Southerly Designs’ FCBs by Malaysian operators. In September, Strategic Marine delivered the first of two 40-m FCBs to Malaysia’s Blue Petra Sdn, a unit of Great Ocean Supply & Services. Other shipyards are also securing contracts to build multiple crewboats – a promising sign for the offshore oil and gas sector.
The 40-m FCB is designed to meet the specific requirements of global oil majors and will feature a remote-controlled water monitor with a capacity of 1,200 m³/hr, making it fully equipped to carry out external fire-fighting roles and safety standby duties.
Propulsion is supplied by three Caterpillar C32 main engines that drive fixed pitch propellors. Station-keeping and manoeuvrability is enhanced by a bow tunnel thruster.
Internally, the vessel will feature a large galley, and mess areas with dry store catering for a large crew with extended operational endurance. The passenger saloon offers 80 airline-style reclining seats arranged with either single or twin seats in each row to provide additional space and privacy.
The aft deck has a large clear area of 120 m² with deck strength of 2 tonnes/m². The vessel cargo fuel capacity is 70 m³ and cargo freshwater capacity is 30 m³ allowing for extended endurance operations at sea.
