Pon Power, a Scandinavian distributor of CAT and MaK engines to the maritime and oil and gas sector, has opened a test centre in Norway
In a statement, the company said, “As an important part of our commitment to environmentally friendly solutions for the maritime industry, Pon Power has opened its new test center for hybrid propulsion solutions at the head office at Berger outside Oslo.”
The centre’s primary task will be to develop, test and optimise hybrid propulsion systems to reduce operating costs and climate emissions. Pon Power hopes to develop greater competence and expertise in technology, design, production, installation and start-up.
Pon Power chief executive Claus Frithjof Høyer said “In addition, we will be able to test and document the effects of the systems, reduce risk and ensure successful installations. There is a great need for knowledge about hybrid systems in the market.”
Pon Power has, in collaboration with Norwegian firm MHTech, developed and launched an online configuration tool for hybrid propulsion on its website. Users can configure their own hybrid systems according to their needs by specifying the type of vessel, operating profile, and power requirements.
The tool will find the optimal solution based on criteria such as fuel savings, CO2 emissions, investment cost, and estimated price with support from fintech firm Enova. Pon Power added, “We will be able to use the experience from the test center to update the data basis behind the configurator and further develop it.”
