Germany-headquartered Schottel supplied propulsion thrusters for the world’s first hydrogen-powered tug Hydrotug, under construction at Astilleros Armon in Spain
Hydrotug was launched May 2022 and is scheduled for completion Q4 2022 to enter operations at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges Q1 2023.
Schottel delivered two RudderPropellers type SRP 460, each producing 2,000 kW of power, driven by two BeHydro V12-cylinder, dual-fuel, medium-speed engines that can run on hydrogen and diesel. BeHydro is a joint venture of Anglo Belgian Corp and CMB.Tech.
Each SRP 460 has a nozzle propeller with a diameter of 2.4 m, and the thruster configuration will enable this 31-m tug to achieve a bollard pull of 65 tonnes.
“With Hydrotug, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges is making an important step in the transition to a sustainable, CO2-neutral port,” said Port of Antwerp-Bruges chief executive Jacques Vandermeiren.
“The port is systematically pursuing a policy of making its entire fleet eco-friendly by incorporating the most environment-friendly technologies available on the market.”
Hydrotug will have low CO2 emissions when executing harbour operations while using hydrogen fuel.
Astilleros Armon has also installed selective catalytic reduction and particle filters to minimise emissions of NOx and particulates from diesel combustion.
Astilleros Armon has built more than 950 vessels to date, specialising in tugs, offshore support and fishing vessels.
Schottel, founded in 1921, has supplied azimuth propulsion and complete propulsion systems with power ratings of up to 30 MW for vessels of all sizes.
Port of Antwerp-Bruges is one of the biggest ports in the world and the second-largest seaport in Europe, after Rotterdam.
