PSA Group has started collaborating with an institute in Singapore to develop advanced artificial intelligence modelling and simulation technologies
A PSA Group subsidiary is planning to invest in artificial intelligence (AI) modelling and simulation technologies to strengthen Singapore’s position as a resilient maritime hub.
PSA BDP is collaborating with Singapore’s agency for science, technology and research’s (A*Star) Institute of High-Performance Computing (IHPC) on a three-year joint research initiative. This combines PSA BDP’s global logistics with A*Star IHPC’s capabilities in advanced AI and simulation to detect disruptions and assess their downstream impact on shipping operations, to develop potential risk-mitigation strategies.
This programme will enable earlier detection and a faster response to unforeseen events using algorithms to support maritime logistics providers, shipping lines and port operators to maintain operational continuity and resilience.
This proposed system will use data from the global automatic identification system (AIS) and other publicly available sources to provide clearer insights into terminal capacity and utilisation. It will also explore using large language models to analyse unstructured information, such as news or regulatory updates, to complement maritime data.
PSA BDP said this project aims to help companies better anticipate and manage disruption risks to supply chains, PSA terminal operations and shipping.
“Our collaboration with A*Star IHPC strengthens our vision of acting with confidence through data-driven, AI-powered insights and simulation,” said PSA BDP chief digital innovation officer Neil Wheeldon.
“We can empower global shippers to anticipate supply chain disruptions and evaluate alternative scenarios. Deep research efforts will bring to life the next generation of analytics solutions to unlock new efficiencies and drive tangible value.”
Developed AI models will be tested and validated in Singapore before being expanded to other commercial markets globally.
“Big data and AI have the potential to transform how shippers and solution providers manage risk and build resilience across global shipping networks,” said A*Star IHPC executive director Su Yi. “This is especially important for Singapore, a key node in the international maritime system to maintain its reliability amid a rapidly changing environment.”
