A Norwegian shipyard will convert a platform supply vessel (PSV) into a cablelayer for a Caribbean telecommunications company
Vard’s facilities in Brattvaag, Norway will convert 2008-built vessel IT Infinity into a cablelayer for redelivery to Barbados-based IT International Telecom Marine in Q3 2024.
This 93-m, 4,277-gt vessel was built as Volstad Princess for Volstad Maritime and was acquired by SD Standard Drilling in 2017 and sold again in 2021 to become IT Infinity.
“Returning to the shipyard where it was built provides unique efficiencies, decreasing time to market for an industry in dire need of these specialised ships,” said IT International general manager Louise Thivierge.
“Starting with an extremely capable vessel was of utmost importance for us. Combined with upgrades to the latest generation submarine cable handling and burial equipment, IT Infinity will be prepared to perform the various tasks required of it by our customers around the world,” she said.
“This conversion project is the first of many in our mission to adapt to the ever-changing demands of the submarine cable space.”
Vard senior vice president for yard services, Wilhelm Eggesbø said Vard will use its experience in designing and constructing advanced cablelaying vessels for this project.
“We will now use our core competence and long experience to meet IT Telecom’s needs in the market,” he said. “This project demonstrates Vard’s strength with our fully integrated value chain and it confirms our position in the aftermarket.”
Vard Electro will install cable, switchboards and update existing electrical systems.
