An extension to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority and DNV will enable remote-controlled vessels to be trialled
Technologies to remotely monitor vessels will be tested in Singapore under an extension to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the nation’s maritime authority and a European classification society.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and DNV have renewed their MoU to continue collaborating on maritime digitalisation, innovation, sustainability and talent development.
Under the latest arrangements, MPA and DNV will jointly drive research and development and provide test beds for innovations including trialling remote vessel operations.
MPA and DNV have also agreed to jointly accelerate the adoption of digitalisation and near-zero-emissions fuels, promote decarbonisation technologies and advance smart-ship systems. Training and talent development through initiatives such as Singapore’s PIER71 maritime innovation committee and smart-port challenge is also included in the MoU.
“Renewal of this MoU underscores the shared commitment of MPA and DNV to co-create solutions that will shape the future of shipping,” said MPA chief executive Ang Wee Keong.
“By combining our regulatory and industry development experience with DNV’s global technical expertise, we can accelerate innovation in smart and sustainable shipping, advance the use of low- and zero-carbon fuels, and strengthen talent and knowledge exchange across the maritime ecosystem.”
This extension builds on earlier partnerships between the port authority and Norwegian classification society established in 2019 and 2022.
“Together, we aim to build a more connected, capable and future-ready maritime sector,” said Mr Keong.
Singapore is at the centre for remote-controlled and autonomous vessel development, with the MPA backing several projects in the past. It is also becoming a central hub for bunkering and adopting low-emissions fuels.
“By strengthening our collaboration with the MPA through this MoU, we aim to accelerate the development and adoption of green and digital maritime solutions, while nurturing the next generation of maritime professionals,” said DNV Maritime chief executive Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen.
“These joint efforts will help to further position Singapore as a centre of excellence for maritime research and innovation, supported by the MPA’s proactive and strategic vision and DNV’s technical and digital capabilities.”
