Snam partners with ACCIONA and RCM Costruzioni to construct a breakwater for the Ravenna LNG terminal, bolstering Italy’s energy infrastructure
Snam, Italy’s gas grid operator, is progressing with the development of its 5Bn m3 per year (bcmy) Ravenna LNG terminal by constructing an 880-m breakwater.
The €216M (US$230M) contract has been awarded to a consortium comprising ACCIONA of Spain and RCM Costruzioni of Italy.
The breakwater, designed as a vertical dock built with concrete caissons, will be situated 8.5 km off Punta Marina, south of the Port of Ravenna, in the North Adriatic Sea. The project is scheduled for completion within 24 months.
The Ravenna LNG terminal will utilise the 170,000-m3 floating storage and regasification unit BW Singapore, which Snam acquired to enhance Italy’s regasification capacity. The terminal is expected to commence operations Q1 2025, increasing Italy’s regasification capacity to 28 bcmy, approximately 45% of the country’s 2023 natural gas demand.
This development aligns with Snam’s 2023–2027 strategic plan, which includes significant investments in LNG infrastructure, biomethane, hydrogen and carbon capture and storage technologies.
The breakwater construction is financed by Cassa Depositi e Prestiti through the Port Authority of the North-Central Adriatic Sea.
