Communications on tankers and bulk carriers operated by Tankerska Plovidba and Atlantska Plovidba will be upgraded to include three types of constellations for faster connectivity
Tankerska Plovidba and Atlantska Plovidba have upgraded satellite communications and cyber security on their tankers and bulk carriers.
These vessels can now connect with satellites in geostationary orbit through very small aperture terminal (VSAT) technology and low Earth orbit (LEO) using flat-panel antennas. Cyber resilience has also been enhanced by application controls, web filtering, anti-virus software, firewalls, intrusion protection and unified threat management (UTM).
This upgrade comes after Croatia-headquartered Tankerska Plovidba became the controlling shareholder of Atlantska Plovidba at the end of 2024, which brought together a combined fleet of product tankers and bulk carriers.
“Just as Tankerska cares for its seafarers, we take care to ensure that our vessels are equipped with state-of-the-art technology for enhanced safety and environmental protection,” says Tankerska Plovidba management board member Ivan Pupovac.
“We are deploying technology that strengthens our fleet operations and supports our crews in their daily working lives on board ships.”
Marlink’s hybrid network platform Sealink Nextgen has been deployed on 22 tankers and bulk carriers operated by Tankerska Plovidba and Atlantska Plovidba.
This investment supports the company’s transition to fully digitalised shipping operations, enhancing efficiency and crew communications.
Sealink Nextgen combines traditional VSAT with SpaceX’s Starlink LEO connectivity with L-band back-up managed by Marlink’s XChange module. This is all protected by cyber security applications and Marlink’s UTM.
“By understanding Tankerska Plovidba’s needs for quality, security and enhanced connectivity options we are able to unlock opportunities and deliver tangible service enhancements,” said Marlink president of maritime Tore Morten Olsen.
