TotalEnergies and hydrocarbon exploration company Apache Corporation announced the discovery of oil in the Sapakara South-1 well on Block 58 off the coast of Suriname
This announcement follows previous discoveries at Maka Central, Sapakara West, Kwaskwasi and Keskesi, all off the coast of Suriname.
The current well – Sapakara South-1 – is located 4 km southeast of the Sapakara West-1 discovery.
Total said Sapakara South-1 was drilled in a water depth of 850 m and encountered 30 m net pay of oil, in a good quality Campano-Maastrichtian reservoir.
Commenting on the news, TotalEnergies senior vice president Kevin McLachlan said, “We are pleased by this new successful well at Sapakara South-1, very similar to the one announced in Keskesi earlier this year. These repeated positive results confirm our strategy which targets large resource volumes at low development costs.”
The drilling operations will continue with the Maersk Valiant drillship. Total is the new operator of Block 58, having assumed operatorship on 1 January this year with a 50% working interest.
Apache Corporation holds the other 50%. Upon completion of the Sapakara South -1 well, the rig will move to drill the Bonboni-1 well in Block 58.
