The German tugboat owner used Riviera’s TUGTECHNOLOGY ’25 conference in May to order a new tugboat from a leading Turkish builder
H Schramm Towage signed a contract with Turkish shipbuilder Sanmar Shipyards to construct a twin Z-drive tractor tug while both parties were attending Riviera’s TUGTECHNOLOGY ’25 conference in Antwerp, Belgium, in May.
A Delicay-class tractor tug will be constructed at one of Sanmar’s shipyards in Turkey to Robert Allan Ltd’s TRAktor-Z 2500SX design, which is exclusive to the shipbuilder, with 80 tonnes of bollard pull.
This 25-m tug will have a beam of 12 m, a draught of 6 m, a FiFi1 fire-fighting system for emergency response, twin Caterpillar E-series main diesel engines, an exhaust gas aftertreatment system for compliance with stringent IMO Tier III emissions standards, and two Kongsberg-manufactured Z-drive thrusters.
H Schramm Towage is a family owned company that primarily operates in northern Germany where the Elbe River meets the North Sea, and in the Baltic Sea and Kiel Canal.
“This new order represents another important milestone in our long-standing relationship with Sanmar, which has proven to be a reliable and forward-looking partner over the years,” said H Schramm Towage managing director Nico Andritter-Witt.
“As we continue to modernise our fleet, investing in newbuild tugboats is essential to meet the high standards of our clients and the operational demands of our region.”
This newbuilding order follows delivery of a similar Delicay-class tug, Bo, from Sanmar in 2024 and another of these 25-m tugboats, Sonke, in 2020.
“With the new Delicay-class tug, we are further strengthening our capabilities in harbour and escort operations, ensuring the highest levels of safety and efficiency,” said Mr Andritter-Witt. “We are proud to once again collaborate with Sanmar and look forward to adding another powerful asset to our fleet.”
Sanmar started delivering tugboats to H Schramm Towage in 2005 with twin screw tug Corvin with 45 tonnes of bollard pull. This was followed by Corvin 2 in 2007, Max in 2009 and Navtug Torsten in 2012.
“We are working with the team at H Schramm once again, providing them with a modern, powerful and environmentally responsible tug tailored to their operational requirements,” confirmed Sanmar Shipyards commercial director Rüçhan Çıvgın.
“We will collaborate closely throughout the entire process, from initial design to sea trials, to ensure the best results. Our Delicay class continues to evolve, and this latest vessel will be the most technologically advanced and environmentally friendly in the series.”
The contract was signed during the recent TUGTECHNOLOGY ’25 conference when senior executives from both companies were in attendance.
“TUGTECHNOLOGY ’25 is a key industry event, especially for showcasing innovation and forward-thinking solutions,” said Mr Çıvgın. “Signing this contract during our two days in Antwerp made the experience even more meaningful.”
