Compressor overhauls help strengthen European energy security by ensuring FSRU vessels remain reliable during deployment
Floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) are playing a key role in bolstering European energy security.
With limited infrastructure for importing liquified natural gas (LNG) in many regions, these units serve as an interim solution to ensure gas supply continuity.
In recent months, Burckhardt Compression has completed urgent compressor overhauls for two unnamed FSRUs, owned by a major maritime energy operator, ensuring the vessels are prepared for service.
The operator required immediate attention to the Burckhardt Compression Laby 5LP250 compressors aboard the vessels. The equipment, with a rated power of 2,000 kW, had seen limited use and exhibited issues such as vibration, prompting the company to seek overhaul services before deployment.
Burckhardt Compression was tasked with inspecting and restoring the compressors to operational condition. The overhaul project presented several challenges, including tight deadlines and an unclear scope of repairs.
Initial inspections revealed issues with auxiliary components such as electric motors, safety valves, and rusted anti-vibration pads. Burckhardt Compression’s team swiftly developed a plan, sourcing replacement parts and completing the overhaul in time for deployment. The successful compressor overhaul eliminated vibration issues, ensuring the equipment would operate reliably in the field.
