AIT Worldwide Logistics vice president of global sustainability Chelsea Lamar explains how her passion for sustainability led her to her career in shipping
What inspired you to pursue a career in the marine industry?
My path to the marine industry started through my passion for climate and sustainability work. I began my career focused on sustainability and environmental initiatives, working in non-profit, consulting and corporate roles focused on sustainable buildings and transport. The shipping and logistics sector caught my attention because of the massive opportunity to drive meaningful change and the need for creative solutions.
What are your responsibilities in your current role?
I oversee AIT Worldwide Logistics’ comprehensive sustainability strategy across all operations. This includes setting ambitious but achievable emissions reduction targets, collaborating with our carrier partners and customers to bring sustainable transport solutions to market, and working with ZEMBA and our ocean carriers on procuring sustainable marine fuel. A significant part of the role involves engaging with stakeholders across the supply chain to develop innovative approaches aimed at reducing our environmental impact while maintaining operational excellence.
Was there anyone who inspired or encouraged you in your career?
I’ve been fortunate to have several mentors throughout my career who have recognised the importance of climate action and viewed it as a business imperative. I continue to be inspired everyday by our customers, carriers and others in the industry who are constantly innovating and pushing the boundaries of sustainable transport. I find ZEMBA is an inspirational group in their high level of ambition, leadership and collaboration within the maritime industry.
What have been some of your biggest hurdles along the way?
One of the biggest hurdles has been the shifting perception that sustainability initiatives are merely cost centres rather than drivers of innovation and long-term value. Sustainability is a strategic imperative needed to future-proof your business.
What do you see as the biggest challenges for your company and the maritime industry?
Our biggest challenge is creating scaleable, cost-effective solutions to reduce emissions without affecting operations. This requires capital investment and research efforts, which can be difficult. Nonetheless, we are committed to addressing environmental concerns while maintaining operational efficiency.
What would you say to any other young person who was thinking of a career in the maritime or offshore industries?
This is an incredibly exciting time to enter the industry, especially if you have a passion for sustainability and climate action. The sector is undergoing a fundamental transformation which creates huge opportunities for creativity, innovation and impact.
