"LNG remains essential for energy system flexibility, even in lower-growth scenarios," noted one senior market analyst.

Delegates at Riviera’s LNG Shipping & Terminals Conference in London were presented with unmistakable evidence that technological innovation and service development is tackling key market challenges and creating new opportunities.

The expansion of LNG as a marine fuel continues to accelerate, with bunkering infrastructure development creating new revenue streams for operators and equipment suppliers. One case study on advanced emissions monitoring system demonstrated savings of €400,000 annually per vessel in EU ETS taxes are achievable. There was also strong interest in bio-LNG pathways.

The sector’s workforce development needs present significant opportunities, with 18,000 new seafarers required within five years. The conference heard innovative solutions for crew development and retention are attracting strong interest from operators seeking to maintain competitiveness.

Legal experts outlined how evolving contract structures are enabling more sophisticated commercial arrangements. New contractual frameworks are facilitating market entry for container and cruise operators, expanding the industry’s customer base while supporting the growth of LNG as marine fuel.

The buoyant mood was reflected in the strong delegate engagement, bustling exhibition area, and intense networking over the two days. Exhibitors reported a keen commercial interest in new solutions, particularly those that add value by enhancing efficiency and ensuring compliance.

Analysis presented by leading industry bodies during the conference suggests LNG demand will grow between 1-2% annually post-2028, despite energy transition pressures.

"LNG remains essential for energy system flexibility, even in lower-growth scenarios," noted one senior market analyst. "While growth rates may moderate from historical 5-7% levels, LNG’s role in supporting renewable energy integration remains crucial."

Riviera’s LNG Shipping & Terminals Conference returns in 2025 alongside its popular themed webinar week. Year-round coverage of the sector can be found in online.
