Svanehøj will supply 32 ammonia fuel pumps for ammonia-powered Newcastlemax bulk carriers under construction in China
Pump manufacturer Svanehøj has secured a contract to supply ammonia fuel pumps for a series of ammonia-powered Newcastlemax (210,000-dwt) bulk carriers, marking a pivotal moment in the industry’s move toward greener technologies.
This contract, awarded to Svanehøj by SunRui Marine Environment Engineering Co Ltd, involves the delivery of 32 Deepwell NH3 fuel pumps for eight dual-fuel Newcastlemax dry bulk carriers. The first of these pumps is scheduled for delivery Q4 2024, but Svanehøj does not reveal the name of the owner.
However, the ammonia-powered bulk carriers are said to be under construction at Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding in China.
According to VesselsValue data, several owners have matching vessels contracted to Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding. This includes Eastern Pacific Shipping, CMB Tech and Berge Bulk.
Eastern Pacific Shipping, for instance, has committed to multiple ammonia-fuelled Newcastlemax vessels, reflecting its strategic focus on sustainable shipping.
Similarly, Berge Bulk has confirmed orders for two ammonia dual-fuel Newcastlemax bulk carriers, reinforcing its ambitious goals for decarbonisation.
CMB Tech has also been active in this space, with its involvement in developing ammonia-ready bulk carriers.
WinGD, the engine designer behind the ammonia-powered X-DF engines that will drive these vessels, has played a crucial role in advancing ammonia technology. WinGD’s development of the X-DF-A dual-fuel ammonia engines, scheduled for deployment from 2025, has been supported by strong partnerships with shipowners, shipbuilders and classification societies.
The approval in principle from Lloyd’s Register for these engines marks a milestone in ensuring their compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
In tandem with technological innovations, there is a growing focus on upskilling the maritime workforce to handle ammonia-capable engines. A Singapore shipowner has initiated efforts to train its crew in managing the complexities of ammonia-powered vessels, highlighting the importance of human capital in the successful adoption of new technologies.
