Sternula, which provides secure data exchange services over VHF radio (VDES) and Marine-Fields Holdings have signed a co-operation agreement to provide information on vessel movements to stakeholders
This will combine VDES, Maritime Messaging Service (MMS) and satellite services VDES-SAT with Marine-Fields’s data exchange platform for port call information, Perseus, enabling ship operators, owners and managers, and terminal operators, harbour authorities, coastal administrations and hinterland logistics to access data securely to optimise port calls and reduce ship emissions.
“Adding the new international data exchange system VDES and VDES-SAT of Sternula is yet another advanced capability to our Perseus platform,” said Marine-Fields chief executive Michael Bergmann.
“Together, we will be able to offer an even broader range of services and solutions, and we look forward serving the needs of the maritime industry in the challenging times of digitalisation.”
Perseus is a cloud-based platform and an intermediary that can communicate directly with stakeholders or interface with other systems such as port community networks and terminal operating systems.
“VDES and MMS will be key technologies for all critical operational processes in the maritime industry in the coming years,” said Sternula chief executive Lars Moltsen. “We are committed to shaping the industry’s future when it comes to secure and scalable communication systems.”
Perseus enables data exchange and communications between ships, ports and port-to-port, providing high visibility across supply chains and facilitating just-in-time (JIT) port arrivals and JIT logistics.
It aligns with International Association of Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) standard S-211 for port-call message services and Port CDM’s port collaborative decision-making requirements, and has implemented guidelines for a maritime connectivity platform.
It already hosts information from the automatic identification system (AIS) and other shipping data from Kpler and port communications systems from Hexagon.
According to IALA, VDES is a radiocommunications system operating between ships, shore stations and satellites on AIS, application specific messages and VHF data exchange (VDE) frequencies in the marine mobile VHF band.
VDES is seen as an effective and efficient use of radio spectrum, building on the capabilities of AIS and addressing the increasing requirements for data through the system.
New techniques providing higher data rates than those used for AIS is a core element of VDES. The VDES network protocol is optimised for data communications so that each VDES message is transmitted with a high confidence of reception.
VDES supports e-navigation and uses higher capacity modulation schemes for data transmission and communications than AIS, handling more information and being more secure.
