A Hanwha Ocean eight-vessel newbuilding order will see the vessels’ low-pressure, two-stroke engines fitted with compact LNG boil-off gas (BOG) compressors
Hanwha Ocean, formerly known as Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, is building a series of eight LNG carriers using its patented partial reliquefaction system, a key component of the carriers’ propulsion technology. For the vessels, Hanwha, one of South Korea’s largest shipbuilders, is using compressors from Burckhardt Compression, which has recently expanded into the LNG shipbuilding market for LNG carriers equipped with low-pressure two-stroke engines.
Hanwha Ocean said a deciding factor in the choice was Burckhardt’s expertise in the marine sector and its ability to offer tailored and efficient systems.
Designed to boost LNG boil-off gas to 150 bar pressure, Burckhardt’s compressors have dry-running cylinders across all stages, resulting in a compact system designed for space-constrained marine applications.
According to Burckhardt, the compressors have been “tailored to the customer’s needs and adapted to their patented system." The BOG compressors will integrate ’seamlessly,’ the company said.
Burckhardt Compression has been known for its reciprocating compressors, and the order to supply LNG boil-off-gas handling compressors for eight LNG carriers for Hanwha Ocean expands its marine business to "meet growing demands in the LNG sector," the company said.
Burckhardt Compression’s CEO, Fabrice Billard, noted the company’s role in advancing sustainable practices in the marine industry, saying "we are proud to contribute to this shift".
