Ektank AB, Shell Shipping and Maritime, and DNV have announced Hy-Ekotank, a hydrogen-powered tanker concept
During Donsö Shipping Meet 2022, Ektank AB, Shell Shipping and Maritime, and DNV announced a hydrogen-powered tanker concept.
Speaking to Tanker Shipping & Trade, Ektank AB chief executive Jörgen Johnsson spoke about the new project and said, “The reason is to show what is technically possible ahead of any new EU rules and to reduce the carbon footprint.”
The hydrogen-powered tanker will allow zero emissions in port, and up to a 100% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions during voyages.
The pioneering concept could become a first mover in this maritime shipping segment and contribute to achieving the ambitious climate targets committed by the European Union.
In a statement on the project, Shell Shipping and Maritime technology manager Stephen Brown said, “We are working with our customers and across sectors to accelerate the transition to net-zero emissions. We will contribute to a net-zero world, where society stops adding to the greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere.”
TECO 2030 Group chief executive Tore Enger said, “We are humbled to work on Hy-Ekotank with Ektank, Shell and DNV, as we believe these partners are a perfect match.”
He added, “With a cargo owner, shipowner, classification society, and a fuel-cell provider, we will show the world what hydrogen is capable of doing for the maritime shipping industry. It is all about eliminating emissions, and increasing value-adding activities.”
