Energy storage systems on a new generation of platform supply vessels will reduce emissions during dynamic positioning and provide a power boost when required
Fujian Mawei Shipbuilding in China is building 10 platform supply vessels (PSVs) for Greek shipowner Capital Offshore, with energy storage systems to lower emissions during dynamic positioning (DP) operations and provide a power increase when needed.
Kongsberg Maritime will supply an extensive range of propulsion, electrical and automation systems for these 10 newbuild vessels under a Nkr800M (US$732M) contract.
Capital Offshore intends to operate these new PSVs in the growing Brazilian market, supporting energy companies developing and producing oil and gas from deepwater fields.
Riviera’s Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cells Conference returns to Bergen, Norway, on 29-31 October 2024 to bring together leading vessel owners, energy companies, port authorities, regulators, class, technology and battery manufacturers. “We aim to ensure these vessels are of the highest quality, as we expand our operations in the offshore sector,” said Capital Offshore general manager Gerry Ventouris.
The Capital group operates a fleet of merchant ships running on various fuels with a diverse suite of propulsion, electrical, energy and automation technologies.
Fujian Mawei is building these 95-m vessels to MMC 897 clean design with battery modules to supplement energy from the main engines for peak shaving and to boost power. They will act as a spinning reserve when PSVs are operating on DP close to offshore drilling rigs, platforms and floating production systems in Brazil.
This battery-hybrid capability offers operational flexibility, enabling these vessels to run on a single engine and for crew to have full flexibility in engine selection, thereby reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
Kongsberg will also provide the propulsion system for each vessel, including two US 255 azimuth thrusters, two TT2200 tunnel thrusters and one ULE PM 155 retractable azimuth thruster, all powered by permanent magnet motors.
The direct current (DC) hybrid electrical powerplant will include generators, DC-switchboard, transformers and energy storage, and is fully integrated with the propulsion system and the DP to optimise operability, performance and fuel efficiency.
“By selecting our integrated solutions for propulsion, DP, automation and electro equipment, Capital Offshore will see benefits not only in increased fuel efficiency, but also lower operational expenditure,” said Kongsberg Maritime president Lisa Edvardsen Haugan.
“Capital Offshore has exciting and ambitious plans for expanding its operations in the oil and gas market. It intends to be a major player in future offshore operations.”
Riviera’s Offshore Support Journal Conference, Middle East will return to Dubai, UAE, 11-12 December 2024, bringing together the industry’s leading vessel owners, oil and gas companies, EPC contractors, technology and service providers to discuss opportunities, challenges and strategies to succeed in a booming offshore market.
