Maritime Partners has contracted Thordon Bearings to provide a range of bearings for fleets of new workboats being built in Louisiana, USA
Thordon will supply water-lubricated, grease-free bearings for several vessels being built for inland waterways. Under this multi-vessel supply agreement, bearings will be installed on 12 twin-screw push boats on order from FMT Shipyard & Repair’s facility.
Thordon will supply its RiverTough tailshaft bearings, ThorPlas-Blue rudder bearings with pucker seals, ThorPlas-Blue steering linkage bushings, SXL thrust washers, and TG100 tailshaft seals.
Maritime Partners owns a fleet of 1,600 inland river vessels operated under bareboat charter, many with individual pieces of Thordon equipment. This latest contract will be the company’s first newbuilds to feature a complete portfolio of Thordon technology supplied by contractor DiSalvo Marine.
Maritime Partners co-founder and president Austin Sperry said ordering Thordon’s full suite for these newbuildings was part of the company’s plans to become more sustainable.
“As a founding member of the BlueSky Maritime Coalition, we have a commitment to and a responsibility for environmentally sustainable maritime operations,” he said.
“The application of technical solutions that deliver no environmental risk is a no-brainer for us.”
These moves are part of a wider industry drive to reduce emissions from inland waterways. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is looking to phase out older, high-fuel emitting workboats as owners renew their fleets.
Maritime Partners is thought to operate one of the most modern and environmentally efficient fleets across the US inland river network. It has optimised its vessel charter business by opting for two different engine packages on these new push boats.
Both engine options meet the latest EPA requirements. These Entech-designed vessels use the maximum power rating without having to use EPA Tier IV engines with exhaust after-treatment systems, which benefits charterers as it reduces operating costs.
