Eastland Group has started operating new harbour tugs Maki and Ika Nui at the port of Tairāwhiti (Gisborne) in the North Island to improve ship handling and towage
Built by Cheoy Lee Shipyards in China to a RAmparts 2100-CL design by Robert Allan Ltd (RAL), these tugs were required as more forestry products are exported from the eastern-most commercial port in New Zealand. Nearly 3M tonnes of logs pass through the port each year.
Maki and Ika Nui each has an overall length of 21 m, moulded beam of 11 m and maximum draught of around 4 m. At 273 gt, the tugboats have a bollard pull of 51 tonnes and free running speed of 12 knots.
They were classed by Lloyd’s Register for New Zealand coastal service, in-water inspection and unmanned machinery spaces.
Propulsion on Maki and Ika Nui comprises two Caterpillar-manufactured Cat 3512C main diesel engines, each developing 1,500 kW at 1,600 rpm which are linked to two Schottel Rudderpropellers of type SRP 360 in Z-drive configuration and fixed-pitch propellers. Deck machinery on each harbour tug includes a bow winch supplied by MacGregor.
“The accommodations have been outfitted to a high standard for an operating crew of five,” said RAL.
The deckhouse contains an entrance lobby, the galley, mess, two officer cabins and a washroom. There is also a provision store and laundry in the lower deck. Records taken during sea trials show none of the crew cabins have noise level higher than 65 dB.
“This means the extremely quiet boat will provide comfortable working and living environment for its crew,” said RAL.
“The wheelhouse is designed with a single split control station which provides maximum all-round visibility with visibility to the bow and side fendering, as well as operation on the aft deck,” the naval architect said.
The engineroom has an acoustically isolated switchboard room. The tanks can store 41 m3 of fuel oil and 5 m3 of potable water.
Ship-handling fenders at the bow consist of an upper row of cylindrical fenders and a lower course of W-shaped fender. Sheer fendering consists of D-shaped rubbers and W-shaped block type fendering at the stern.
