The M-series consists of several rudder propeller sizes covering a power range of 400 to 1,000-kW
With the M-series, Schottel is aiming to meet new standards in the market, such as shifted engine power classes, updated ice-class rules and an increasing number of electric or hybrid-driven vessels.
The new azimuth thrusters combine the latest technologies in mechanical engineering, hydrodynamics and digitalisation and are available in three sizes: 210 (640 kW), 240 (850 kW) and 270 (1,000 kW), corresponding to common engine power classes. All sizes are equipped with a planetary steering gear.
The azimuth modules are available for Z-drives, L-drives and ZY-hybrid drives, making the thrusters suitable for horizontal electric, vertical electric or combined direct engine plus horizontal electric motor connection and compatible with hybrid systems.
Schottel said installing the M-series will require no vessel design modification as a result of two basic installation variants. The company is offering a standard installation with a variable propeller arm length and a compact minimised variant with a shorter propeller arm length.
These compact installation variants (LC for L-drives, ZC for Z-drives) open up new scope and greater design freedom for ship designers, while leaving more space for other equipment. Both the standard and the compact variant can be bolted, welded or resiliently mounted on vessels.
The company said two different propulsion modules – the existing Rudderpropeller and the more environmentally friendly EcoPeller – will ensure that the M-series can be used for multiple operation profiles. The modular system on the M-series will allow for multiple configuration options resulting in greater versatility and flexibility in the medium power range, high reliability, optimal spare part availability, and retrofit options.
The first propulsion units of the new M-series have recently been delivered and will soon be put into operation.
