NYK Group has started operating the first fully electric workboat, built to manoeuvre tugs into a shipyard dock, in Japan
Keihin Dock Co, a subsidiary of NYK Group, has begun operating what it claims to be the first fully battery-driven workboat in Japan at its shipyard in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture.
Built without an onboard diesel generator, e-Crea will support tugboats docking at the Koyasu Shipyard and provide in-field experience to NYK as the group implements technologies to realise low- and zero-carbon vessel operations.
This 9-m vessel has full-electric propulsion with an energy storage system on board that is regularly charged from a quayside unit at Koyasu Shipyard. With a beam of 3 m and a depth of almost 2 m, it was built by Keihin Dock and classed by JCI, Japan’s craft inspection organisation.
NYK said e-Crea was built to a compact design that “consolidates all essential equipment within its hull” and improves workboat manoeuvrability in confined spaces, “making it ideally suited for assisting with docking operations and vessel movement at shipyards.”
During its construction, Keihin Dock overcame technical challenges including its weight and vessel balance from the substantial battery modules. These were overcome by reconfiguring equipment placement and cabling to optimise internal space and ensure safe and stable navigation.
Keihin Dock installed multi-layered water-cooling systems and integrated air ducts to mitigate the fire risk from rising temperatures from batteries and electric motors.
“Enhancements to the battery room included fireproofing measures and protection against hazardous gases, along with improved ventilation,” said NYK. “These measures ensure the vessel upholds robust safety standards.”
NYK is using data and insights from e-Crea’s construction and operations on its next decarbonisation project – building an electric-propulsion tugboat, scheduled for completion in December 2026.
The Japanese shipping group intends to construct and operate more low-emissions vessels as part of its commitment to energy-saving innovations and next-generation solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
