Asymmetric tractor tug is set to play a crucial role in ensuring safe, eco-friendly operations at one of Spain’s most vital ports
A new tractor tug has become the first in the world to feature powerful diesel MM+ engines from MAN Energy Solutions. Uzmar Shipyard in Turkey built Balahu for a P&O Maritime Logistics subsidiary in Spain with 74 tonnes of bollard pull.
This asymmetric tractor tug (ATT) was built as shipyard number NB169 to a design by Cintranaval for P&O Reyser to support ultra-large ships visiting the Port of Barcelona, one of Spain’s busiest harbours.
It has two MAN Energy Solution 12V175D MM+ engines, which are renowned as the world’s most powerful 12-cylinder, high-speed, four-stroke diesel engines, each delivering 2,400 kW of mechanical power at 1,800 rpm. Uzmar says this makes Balahu the first tugboat in the world to feature these engines, “setting a new benchmark for power and performance in port operations.”
Its engines are linked to a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit to minimise NOx in the exhaust to comply with IMO Tier III emissions standards.
“This delivery represents a significant addition to our fleet and highlights the strength of the partnership with Uzmar,” says P&O Reyser chief executive Iñigo Garcia Gorbeña.
“We look forward to soon receiving the next tugboat, Caraba, which will further enhance our capabilities.”
Uzmar says this 375-gt vessel is an “advanced eco-silent tugboat” with “an innovative propulsion system” powered by two Kongsberg Z-drives. “This asymmetrical configuration ensures exceptional manoeuvrability, ideal for handling large vessels in high-traffic port environments,” Uzmar says. It has a FiFi1 class fire-fighting system, an Ibercisa double-drum ship-towage winch on the aft deck and a Palfinger crane.
Balahu arrived in Barcelona 25 October after its delivery on 15 October at the shipyard. “This tug is built to guarantee safe, precise operations in Barcelona’s port, where efficiency and accuracy are essential for smooth maritime traffic management,” says Uzmar.
The shipbuilder outfitted the crew accommodation to minimise vibration and noise from the engineroom to meet eco-silent and comfort class notations.
“This focus on minimising noise pollution aligns with the industry’s growing commitment to sustainability and operational excellence,” says Uzmar president Noyan Altuğ.
“Balahu exemplifies cutting-edge advancements in ship design, prioritising safety, environmental responsibility and operational excellence. P&O Reyser shares our vision for a sustainable maritime future.”
