A shipyard in Chile is refurbishing a tugboat purchased by an Australian owner before it sails across the Pacific
Engage Marine has purchased a 2004-built tugboat in Chile and contracted a shipyard to upgrade it for Australian port operations.
ASENAV shipyard in Valdivia, Chile, is refurbishing tugboat Pellaifa, which has served under Ultratug’s management for 21 years. This upgrade work includes modifying the engineroom, installing tanks, piping and an off-ship fire-fighting system, and general maintenance and repair.
Once this work is completed, this 25-m tug will be renamed Engage Ghost and sail across the Pacific Ocean to Australia to begin its new life, manoeuvring and docking ships and providing emergency response if required, where it will face new operational challenges.
This 223-gt vessel, with a beam of around 10 m was built by ASENAV as part of a series of four and is the second Ultratug tug acquired by Engage Marine.
ASENAV has delivered more than 190 vessels in 50 years, including 30 to Ultratug in the past three decades.
In addition, Engage Marine has ordered newbuild harbour tugs for delivery in 2025 after securing towage contracts covering several Australian ports. Its latest awards cover ship handling and towage services in Townsville, Lucinda, Cairns and Mourilyan in Queensland, following a commercial tender process.
These contracts came from Port of Townsville and Ports North, which operate these harbours, and will see Engage Marine take over service from incumbents Smit Lamnalco Towage Australia and Svitzer Australia.
