The French shipowner and operator has contracted to retrofit two Norsepower Rotor Sails on the medium range (MR) tanker Alcyone
The 50,000-dwt, 2022-built, France-flagged tanker is chartered to TotalEnergies and will be retrofitted with two 35-m by 5-m Norsepower Rotor Sails in either Q4 2023 or Q1 2024.
Norsepower said the sails will be delivered in December 2023 from the company’s new production centre in China. The company also touted the 8% average carbon savings the technology offers the tanker on its regular South Pacific route.
"Recent calculations indicate average fuel and carbon emissions reductions will be 8% for the ship as it transits between South Korea and French Polynesia, with the potential for further savings using voyage optimisation reaching up to 2,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum," Norsepower said.
The vessel’s charterer said, depending on the results achieved by the rotor sail, it would consider installing wind propulsion technology on additional vessels.
TotalEnergies senior vice president Jérome Cousin said, “The success of this project could pave the way for a broader adoption of wind-assisted propulsion for TotalEnergies’ fleet.”
According to Norsepower, its Rotor Sail is "particularly well-suited to tankers, with a strong track record of proven performance. This is why we are confident we can achieve at least 8% fuel consumption savings, based on existing data and projections, ensuring Socatra leads the way for more planet-positive operations for others in the oil industry.”
“As the oil industry is moving towards a low-carbon future, it is everyone’s responsibility to put forward tangible and economically viable solutions," Socatra chief executive Laurent Bozzoni said.
"The Norsepower Rotor Sail is widely recognised as a proven solution for seagoing vessels, and we believe our MR tanker Alcyone will benefit from significant efficiency gains and help us reduce our CO2 emissions.”
Norsepower cited the need to take "a holistic approach" to decarbonisation, combining clean technology solutions to make progress towards emissions reduction goals, minimise fuel costs and comply with and improve IMO Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) ratings for vessels.
