Offshore industry’s best innovators were honoured during Riviera Maritime Media’s Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference, Exhibition & Awards for demonstrating what is possible in a competitive sector
Hundreds of delegates from the offshore support vessel sector gathered during a gala dinner to recognise companies that have raised the bar in innovation. Nominees were shortlisted and industry voting determined winners for categories including innovation of the year, contributing to environmental practices, offshore renewables, subsea innovation, dynamic positioning (DP) and safety.
The Innovation of the Year Award, sponsored by Bureau Veritas, was won by Wärtsilä for the RS24 frequency-modulated and continuous wave radar from Guidance Marine.
This high-speed, high-resolution K-band radar, operating at 24 GHz, has five times higher resolution than existing marine S- and X-band radars, providing high levels of situational awareness – especially in densely populated marine environments.
OneStep Power was shortlisted for its DCShortCut, which validates the fault tolerance of cross-connected 24-V DC power supply configurations, through in-circuit failure mode testing. This reduces risk by removing personnel during testing.
MAATS Tech was also shortlisted for its carousel-in-a-carousel arrangement that will allow more cable to be carried without significantly increasing the vessel’s size or cost.
The Safety Award, sponsored by vessel owner Vroon, was a two-horse race with the winner being both Thome Offshore Management and Tasik Subsea for successfully achieving a world-first Infectious Disease Mitigation-Arrangement (IDM-A) notation by classification society ABS.
Earning this notation is proof the vessel in question complies with detailed engineering and procedural requirements for the management of infectious diseases on the vessel.
This venture beat Viking Life-Saving, which was shortlisted for its self-contained evacuation kit for wind turbine tower service technicians.
The tower evacuation kit fits snugly into what is currently an unused space between the platform handrails and the tower’s outer wall.
There was strong competition for the Environmental Award, sponsored by P&O Maritime Logistics, especially with this award coming after the COP26 convention in Glasgow, Scotland.
Solstad Offshore was the winner for upgrading its vessel fleet with battery-hybrid propulsion. This has so far culminated with the ninth platform supply vessel (PSV) operating on the Norwegian continental shelf with battery-hybrid propulsion.
Another owner, Harvey Gulf, was shortlisted. This was for being the first company to receive Enviro+ Green Passport Certification from ABS, as all of Harvey’s LNG-fuelled PSVs will be battery-powered by the end of 2022. They will have real-time monitoring, enabling the comparison of emissions when operating on battery power, natural gas and diesel fuel.
Corvus Energy was shortlisted for the Corvus battery-on-board, a containerised battery-room solution for maximum flexibility in vessel applications.
This year’s Subsea Innovation Award recognised the growing trend of developing and using unmanned and autonomous vessels in offshore activities.
Sea-Kit International and Fugro together won the award for their inspection, maintenance and repair work for Woodside offshore Australia using the uncrewed subsea vessel Fugro Maali.
Kongsberg Maritime was shortlisted for its remotely operated vehicle (ROV) launch and recovery system, LARS, which was specifically designed to handle ROVs from unmanned vessels.
Kongsberg went one stage further by winning the Dynamic Positioning Award, sponsored by Damen, for its DP Digital Survey application. This uniquely digitises all the data derived from the DP annual tests to verify the performance and redundancy of the vessel-specific DP system.
Also shortlisted for this award was Keelson Marine for the first DP application, containing access to DP knowledge and guidance, as well as a forum, expert area, a regular DP quiz and links to the latest DP news.
Simwave was shortlisted for its digital twin modelling and simulation training and for developing a hydrodynamic mathematical model of the pipe-laying vessel Amazon under various loading conditions.
There was also an honourable mention for International Marine Contractors Association technical adviser Captain Andy Goldsmith.
