An owner of ships transporting cargo between Washington and Alaska is installing hybrid communications networks and upgrading cyber security for resilient connectivity between communities
Coastal Transportation is investing in satellite communications and cyber security for its fleet of ships transporting cargo between Washington state and Alaskan ports to improve reliability and resilience.
The Seattle, US-headquartered shipowner has selected Viasat subsidiary Inmarsat Maritime to provide bonded, hybrid connectivity services using NexusWave communications and cyber security solutions for its fleet of refrigerated and general cargo ships over the next few months.
NexusWave combines Ka-band and L-band communications over Inmarsat’s Global Xpress constellation of geostationary orbiting satellites and connectivity with Eutelsat OneWeb’s low Earth orbit satellites.
“Upgrading to Inmarsat NexusWave was a natural next step for our cargo fleet,” said Coastal Transportation technical programme manager Stephanie Grisham.
“NexusWave is the only connectivity solution on the market that delivers the levels of security and reliability we need to support safe and efficient operations from port to port. We also value the convenience it offers as a single solution from one provider that seamlessly combines the capabilities of multiple services.”
Inmarsat said NexusWave is designed to deliver global coverage and network availability exceeding 99.9%, helping ensure Coastal Transportation’s vessels and its crews are consistently connected to high-speed internet from Seattle to Dutch Harbor, Alaska.
“Coastal Transportation is the latest in a cohort of operators that appreciate the value of fully managed, bonded connectivity as an enabler of safe, efficient, and secure fleet operations,” said Inmarsat Maritime sales account manager Logan Murray.
