Maersk Supply Service is installing a battery pack on Maersk Minder as part of the vessel’s groundbreaking conversion to the world’s first hybrid-battery anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessel
In addition to the battery pack, a selective catalytic reduction system will be installed on Maersk Minder, with Wärtsilä providing the turnkey solution.
In 2022 and 2023, the Danish offshore support vessel owner will undertake five more battery retrofits and six variable frequency drive upgrade projects, as well as ramping up its biofuel testing. Maersk Supply Service chief operating officer Mark Handin outlined the company’s ambitious decarbonisation plans to delegates last year at the Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference in November. Mr Handin will provide an update on Maersk Supply Services’ decarbonisation efforts, as well as participate in a vessel owners’ panel at this year’s Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference.
Once the conversion is completed at Fitjar Mekaniske Verkstad, a shipyard located south of Bergen on the west coast of Norway, Maersk Minder will go on charter to Moreld Ross Offshore under a call-off agreement.
A Maersk spokesperson said the conversion of Maersk Minder should be completed by June 2022.
“Maersk Supply Service has set ambitious decarbonisation targets to halve our carbon intensity by 2030 (as compared with a 2018 baseline) and to reach net-zero operations by 2040. We are committed to doing everything we can to meaningfully reduce emissions through changing behaviours, implementing new technologies and extending collaboration across the industry,” the company wrote in a social media post.
Based on a Salt design, Maersk Minder is a powerful, dynamic positioning class 2-capable AHTS, with an overall length of 95 m, beam of 25 m, depth of 11 m, outfitted with a covered remotely operated vehicle garage for one work-class ROV, a 450-tonne drum anchor handling winch and 500-tonnne double-drum towing winches.
“We are therefore especially proud to be able to support Ross Offshore, as one of the most active vessel charterers on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, and look forward to delivering safe and sustainable operations for their clients,” said Maersk.
The Offshore Support Journal Conference will be held 15 June 2022. Details and tickets can be found here
