One of the world’s largest marine enginebuilders, Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine & Machinery Division (HHI-EMD) is gearing up for the dual-fuel future with the opening of a new engine factory in South Korea
HHI-EMD, an affiliate of the HHI Group, held a ceremony 14 October commemorating the opening of an engine factory at Daebul National Industrial Complex in Yeongam-gun, Jeollanam-do, South Korea.
With a land area of 61,000 m2 and a building area of 19,000 m2, the new factory will have specialised facilities for manufacturing dual-fuel engines, with the capability of producing 100 sets of four-stroke HiMSEN engines annually.
HHI-EMD plans to supply these dual-fuel engines to South Korean shipyards such as Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and international shipbuilders. HHI-EMD called the HiMSEN engine an “eco-friendly, dual-fuel engine” that reduces emissions, and “the demand is expected to increase significantly in the future by the trend of strengthening environmental regulations.”
In September, HHI-EMD reported its new methanol dual-fuel HiMSEN engines completed type-approval testing at its technology centre in Ulsan. Seven classification societies were on hand for the testing of the H32DF-LM, including Korean Register, ABS and DNV.
With a power range between 4,000 and 6,000 hp and bore of 320 mm, the four-stroke H32DF-LM is a genset engine that selectively uses methanol and diesel fuel, significantly reducing CO2 emissions and greenhouse gases such as sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides. Additionally, it prevents corrosion with special materials and applies Diesel-cycle combustion and electronically controlled fuel injection (common rail) methods in methanol mode to enable stable high-power operation.
This December, the first methanol-burning HiMSEN engine will be delivered for AP Møller-Maersk’s carbon-neutral, e-methanol 2,100-TEU container vessel, which is under construction at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.
