Singapore’s largest provider of marine pilot services, harbour activities and ship towage is installing new simulators to train pilots and tug masters to navigate and escort large ships with high levels of automation
PSA Marine is fortifying its training infrastructure by installing advanced simulators from Norway-headquartered Kongsberg Digital in April 2025. This simulator suite will include a full-mission ship bridge simulator and a full-mission tug bridge simulator (both of DNV Class A).
These systems will be used to train marine pilots in realistic simulated environments to manage complex maritime operations.
Installing simulators is part of Kongsberg Digital and PSA Marine’s strategic collaboration to enhance maritime harbour pilot training in southeast Asia.
PSA Marine provides pilotage service to more than 180,000 vessels annually in the Port of Singapore and recognises the need for advanced training to keep ahead of the changes in ship size and environmental regulations to enable pilots to manoeuvre ships with greater precision and navigational safety.
Using Kongsberg simulators and software-based models, PSA Marine harbour pilots will practice navigating in dense traffic, managing new vessel types and responding to emergencies – all within a safe, controlled training environment.
By using both ship bridge and tugboat bridge simulators, pilots can practice navigation, towage and vessel manoeuvring and docking with tug masters, gaining a greater understanding of the operational capabilities of both.
PSA Marine expects this to elevate pilotage capabilities, reinforcing its commitment to maximising port productivity in Singapore.
“Partnering with Kongsberg fortifies our operational and training competencies towards safer and more efficient navigation,” said PSA Marine managing director Er Wei Lim. “The collaboration underscores our commitment to innovation and excellence, empowering our people with the advanced technologies and skills to thrive in a rapidly evolving landscape. We look forward to future collaborations to co-create innovative maritime solutions together.”
Kongsberg Digital, with an office in Singapore, already has a footprint in the area with prominent organisations using its simulators, such as the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, Singapore Police Coast Guard, Singapore Maritime Academy and the Center of Excellence of Maritime Safety.
